Air Washers are useful for those areas, which are moderately dry. Expected saturation efficiency of these units is up to 75%. The advantage of air washer is that there is no atomisation of water. Hence, pumps of lower horsepower can be used. Also, due to the absence of water spray, normal type of mist eliminators are not required. Special PVC fils are used for transfer of heat. The PVC fils matrix is wetted with water droplets and air stream is at right angles to this water flow. This helps in the mixing of both the streams and results in air cooling based on psychometric principle. It is observed that for dry areas, the drop in temperature at the exit of the air washer is as much as 6 to 8°C from the ambient. These are available in four sizes, 5000 CFM, 10,000 CFM, 15,000 CFM, and 20,000 CFM. It is recommended that the units are externally thermal insulated to achieve better performance.
