Profile: American Kynol, Inc. is a manufacturer of novoloid fibers, & carbon and activated carbon fibers. Our product line includes Kynol™, carbon, activated carbon fiber, Kynol™ carbon fibers & textiles. Our Kynol™ novoloid fibers are made by acid-catalyzed cross-linking of melt-spun novolac resin to form a fully cross-linked, three-dimensional, amorphous "network" polymer like structure which is similar to that of thermo-setting phenolic resins. Our Kynol&trade fibers are used in a wide variety of flame & chemical resistant textiles, papers, in composites, gaskets, and friction materials. Our Kynol™ novoloid fibers are infusible and have an inherently high carbon content of about 76 wt%. These carbon fibers are amorphous in structure, and even treatment at the usual graphitization temperatures of 2000 °C, or higher does not result in the formation of the typical well-ordered graphite molecular structure.
