Cast iron usually refers to grey cast iron, iron accounts for more than 95%, while the main alloying elements are carbon and silicon. The amount of carbon in cast irons is the range 2.1 - 4%, and also it contains appreciable amounts of silicon, normally 1 - 3%. This cast iron is used for making flanged fittings because of its strength and corrosion resistance. Cast Iron flanged pipe and fittings are usually cast in the larger diameters and the production method is mainly centrifugal or by means of spinning. These flanged fittings can be used in soils and for water of slightly aggressive character. They are well suited for pressure mains and laterals where tapping are made for house connections.
