Local Area Networks/LAN
Network is a set of devices connected by media links. Local area network is usually private owned and links the devices in a single office, building, or a campus. Depending on the needs of an organization and the type of technology used, a LAN can be as simple as two PCs and a printer in someone's home, office, or it can be extended throughout a company and include voice, sound and video peripherals. LANs are designed to allow resources to be shared between personal computers or workstations. The resources to be shared can include hardware, software, or data. LANs have data rates in the 4 to 16 Mbps range. But it is very common for LANs to have data rates of 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps. The size of the LAN may be determined by licensing restrictions on the number of users per copy of software, or by restrictions on the number of users licensed to access the operating system.

Magnetic Card Reader
Magnetic card is a piece of non-conductive material with an additional piece of magnetic recording material attached to it. The magnetic strip on the backside of the card covers the full width of the card. The exact height and placement of the magnetic strip are not as important as that of the three data tracks within the strip. Each of the three tracks in the strip must measure between 2.80 mm and 3.81 mm high. Users insert magnetic card into the reader and enter a personal access number. When the access number and magnetic card have been verified to be a valid matching pair, the user is authenticated and may access the system. The validation process occurs in four stages such as information input, encryption, comparison and logging. The process begins when a user enters both a card and access number. Depending on the authentication system either an encrypted copy of the password resides on the card or is obtained from the system by information on the card. In either case, an encrypted password is obtained for comparison.
