Description: Harmonic filters come in handy to reduce/eliminate harmonics from the electrical power system. Non-linear loads like DC/AC drives, induction hardening/melting furnaces, rectifiers and UPS systems generate harmonics. This non-linear equipment will generally have low power factor. It is not possible to improve the overall system power factor with the help of power capacitors, when non-linear loads are present in the system. Application of normal power capacitors leads to serious problems like over-loading of the capacitors itself and amplification of harmonic currents. Amplification of harmonic currents can further damage any vital part of the electrical power system. Harmonic filters will help overcoming above problems. They will also improve the power factor. Harmonic filters are categorised as tuned filters; de-tuned filters; and active filters. Ambik Harmonic Filters manufactures tuned and de-tuned harmonic filters. Tuned filters are designed to trap a particular harmonic frequency like 5th, 7th and 11 th. They will offer zero impedance to these frequencies. One set of harmonic filters is to be designed for individual harmonic frequency. The switching On and Off operation is to be monitored critically. Tuned harmonic filters need in-depth study of the system. Harmonic and System impedance analysis is necessary to design tuned harmonic filters. De-tuned filters are designed to absorb part of predominant harmonic frequencies in a power system.
