Mass balances are accounting of material entering and leaving a system. Fundamental to the balance is the conservation of mass principle. It is also called material balance. These are used to design chemical reactors, analyse alternative processes to produce chemicals, in pollution dispersion models. Heat balance calculations are needed to estimate the energy requirements and the cost of the process, as well as the operation preconditions.
