The helium leak detector is a highly sensitive instrument for which avoidance of the back ground signal plays the major role. The vacuum system has four different valves. A stream of electrons of stabilised intensity from a directly heated filament is made to pass through a slit. This electron beam bombards the gas molecules which are present in the vacuum system and forms positive ions.
