These vibrations cause liquefaction of soil which severely reduces friction during penetration or retrieval. In softer soils sonic vibration alone is sufficient to go down. In rock formations, vibration is combined with simultaneous rotation. This allows using rock button bits too, completing the range of formations that can be penetrated.
