Ultrasonic testing features pulses of high-frequency waves are transmitted to the material to be tested. The reflections (echoes) of these pulses are picked up by the receiver. These reflections are presented on a flaw detector screen (CRT). The time taken for the wave to travel through the material is taken from the screen, and the position of the flaw or material thickness can be calculated. With help of artificial flaws in calibration blocks the amount of reflected energy is used to estimate the flaw-size, (in fact the reason for rejection or acceptance of the material). It is used in the detection of imperfections in welds, castings, bar material, shafts, plates, as well as bonding check, and thickness measurements of a wide range of materials.
