The tunnel is excavated manually and graded timbers are used to make up the ground support. It is for short tunnelled sections where microtunnelling equipment or other trenchless equipment does not prove possible of uneconomical. One of the main advantages is the ability to divert past any unknown obstructions and connect into existing services underground while maintaining standard operating conditions above surface. Pipe jacking is a method of tunnelling that utilises hydraulic jacks to force a series of pipes through the ground. As the driving proceeds, ground is either hand dug or mechanically excavated from the face of the tunnel. Steering jacks control the line and level of the leading pipe, which has a shield fixed to it.
