At many facilities, power plant tailwater elevations may be minimized, & power output increased, by directing spillway flows away from the power plant. It allows increased water storage capacity at new or existing reservoirs with little or no decrease in spillway capacity. This avoids the usual compromise between adequate spillway capacity to accommodate floods, & desired water storage capacity.
