Rotating Shaft Seals provide a very compact and simple solution to seal rotating shafts. These are used in low-pressure applications and the moderate temperature is up to 150°C. These are based on sliding contact between the faces of two rigid rings, or stuffing boxes, based on compression of soft packing material against the shaft. The lip seal is loaded onto the shaft by a combination of the force exerted by the circumferential metal garter spring, the elasticity of the rubber and the fluid pressure. The garter spring is necessary to impart sufficient dynamic recovery. The lip angles are unequal, the inside lip angle being the greater.
