Description: Fluid bed dryers dry wet solid feeds that are capable of being fluidised. These come with either open or closed cycle fluid bed designs depending upon the desired product quality and other variables. The feed is introduced into a fluidised layer of particles through which air is passed. The individual particles become suspended in the air at a given velocity. The drying process engenders a state wherein the particles are fluidised and the product layer gains flow characteristics like a liquid. These dryers can be effectively deployed for selective cooling of hot solids like sugar. This assured solution is for drying products, which are difficult to fluidise due to their wide particle size, distribution, fragility and heterogeneous shapes. The advantages include intimate contact of hot air and solids resulting in a high heat transfer coefficient making the drying system compact, mixing of solids leading to a nearly isothermal condition throughout the fluidised bed, eliminating overheating of heat sensitive products because of special constructional features, lower capital cost and low maintenance cost as there are no mechanical moving parts. It affords easier control of residence time, adjusting moisture content of dried product and easy handling of the feed and the product.
