Secondary containment systems are designed to provide an outer barrier between the tank, soil and the back fill material that is capable of holding the material long enough so that a release can be detected. For tank systems containing hazardous substances preventing migration of substance is also a requirement. A double walled tank, a jacketed tank and fully enclosed external liners can provide this type of protection. In addition, the secondary containment must have enough capacity to hold the contents of the tank and should prevent precipitation or ground water intrusion. To maximize environmental protection for double walled tanks, second tank should be made of the same material as the primary tank. For jacketed tanks or tanks with liners, the materials used should be compatible with the product stored. The material should also be sufficiently thick and impermeable to direct a release to the monitoring point and permit its detection.
