Description: Spray Drying is a continuous single stage operation that converts solutions, suspension, and slurries into dry powder within a few without any intermediate handling. The spray drying is ideal for drying heat sensitive materials. The atomization can be carried out with a rotary atomizer, a pressure nozzle, or a two fluid nozzle. The dryer comprises of rotary atomizer where in the liquid is fed through a liquid distributor. The wheel rotates at a high speed causing the disintegration of the materials into fine droplets. The atomized liquid and hot air from the air dispenser come in intimate contact in the drying chamber. With intense direct contact, heat and mass transfer occurs between the two phase. Due to large surface area created by the fine atomization, drying is very rapid and occurs in a matter of seconds. The drying can be co-current/counter depending on the particular application. The chamber can be a flat roof design, top cone design, tall form design with a bustle construction, and two stage designs, with an integrated fluid bed. The powder collection in a plant can be single point or two points. The primary separation of the product occurs in the drying chamber. For secondary collection, a multicyclone, bag filter or a wet scrubber can be used.
