Positive Displacement Meters
Positive Displacement Meters operate by repeatedly filling and emptying compartments of known volume with liquid or gas from a flow stream. The flow rate is calculated based on the number of times these compartments are filled and emptied. The main types of PD flow meters used for gas applications are diaphragm and rotary. These types of meters differ according to the way they trap the liquid into compartments with different shapes. It is a type of flow meter that requires the fluid being measured to mechanically displace components in the meter in order for any fluid flow to occur. The flowmeters make volumetric flow measurements taking finite increments or volumes of the fluid. A basic analogy would be holding a bucket below a tap, filling it to a set level, then quickly replacing it with another bucket and timing the rate at which the buckets are filled.
