Water Meter is a scientific instrument for accurate measurement of quantity of water distributed to the consumers. It is a mechanical device whereas flow meter may be a mechanical or an electronic device. It is always specified in two accuracies such as lower range and upper range, whereas in flow meters it is specified in a single range. The upper range and lower range accuracies are respectively 2% & 5%, of the actual quantity. Water meters having sizes from 15 mm to 50 mm as per BIS 779 are considered to be domestic water meters and sizes from 50 mm and above as per BIS 2373 are considered to be bulk water meters. Water meters are classified according to the operating principle, type of end connections, the standard by which the same are covered, constructional features, method of coupling between the counter and primary sensor.
