An ammeter shunt is a low-resistance device used to conduct most of the circuit current away from the meter movement. Since the metermove meter is connected in parallel with the shunt, the voltage drop across the shunt is the voltage applied to the meter. Most ammeter shunts are manufactured to have a voltage drop of 50 mill volts.
