Evaporative Condensers combine a water-cooled condenser and cooling tower in one piece of equipment. It eliminates the sensible heat transfer step of the condenser water, permitting a condensing temperature within 15F of the design wet bulb, resulting in compressor horsepower savings of 10% or more over water-cooled condenser/cooling tower systems and more than 30% over air-cooled systems. Design conditions with evaporative condensers are usually 90F to 95F saturated condensing temperature with an ambient wet bulb temperature of 72 to 78F. The evaporative condenser combines the cooling tower, condenser surface, water circulating pump and water piping in one assembled unit, thereby eliminating the cost of shipping, handling and installing separate components. Evaporative condensers are apparently water-cooled designs and work on the principle of cooling by evaporating water into a moving air stream. Evaporative condensers use water sprays and air flow to condense refrigerant vapors inside the tubes.

Evaporative cooler is a completely different type of air conditioner that works well in hot, dry climates. It is also known as swamp cooler. Hot outside air enters the swamp cooler. The air passes over water-saturated pads, and the water evaporates into the air. The 15 to 40 degree cooler air is then directed into the home, and pushes warmer air out through windows. When operating an evaporative cooler, windows are opened part way to allow warm indoor air to escape as it is replaced by cooled air. Evaporative coolers use less than one-third the energy of air-conditioners, and cost about half as much to install. It provides a steady stream of fresh air into the house. However, they require more frequent maintenance than refrigerated air-conditioners and they are suitable only for areas with low humidity. An evaporative cooler should have at least two speeds and a vent-only option. During vent-only operation, the water pump does not operate and the outdoor air is not humidified.

Evaporative cooling towers are used for cooling water or other working medium to near the ambient wet-bulb air temperature. Cooling towers use evaporation of water to reject heat from processes such as cooling the circulating water used in oil refineries, chemical plants, power plants and building cooling.

Evaporative Gas Conditioning System is a process for modifying gas temperature and humidity. In this system highly atomized water is introduced directly into the gas stream. It reduces volume & temperature, emissions by reducing dust resistivity, filter bag costs and increasing plant flexibility. It is used for the cooling and enhancement of furnace and boiler off gases. This provides reduced evaporation times for lower temperatures and dry system operation.
