Tile cutters are designed to make straight tile cuts. Much like a glasscutter, the tile is scored with a cutting wheel and then snapped. It is used for cutting ceramic and porcelain tile. The quickest way is by using a hand tile cutter. To cut or break tile, simply put the tile on the padded bed, against the stopping frame. Press the handle down firmly, and roll the cutting wheel along the tile, to score the glaze. With the wheel now resting in the bed, press down on the handle, so the T-shape breaker-bar can pass down the tile to break along the score line, into two pieces.

Like slate, tile roofs last from 50 to 100 years, and most failures are related to the flashing and walking on the tiles rather than from the tiles themselves. Repairs must be made by a specialist who maintains a collection of replacements. If salvaged tiles are not available, there are a few suppliers who will make new tiles to match the old ones.
