The space above warehousing and manufacturing floors is sometimes wasted because all of the building's vertical space isn't utilized. Shell and tube heat exchangers are the most common type of heat exchangers in oil refineries and other large chemical processes, and are suited for higher-pressure applications. These type of heat exchangers consist of a shell (a large pressure vessel) with a bundle of tubes inside it. One fluid runs through the tubes, and another fluid flows over the tubes to transfer heat between the two fluids.
