Distilled water is a water that has virtually all of its impurities removed through distillation. It involves boiling the water and re-condensing the steam into a clean container, leaving contaminants behind. It is used as drinking water in arid seaside areas which do not have sufficient freshwater, by distilling seawater. It is quite common on ships, especially nuclear powered ships, which require a large supply of distilled water as coolant. It is preferable to tap water for use in automotive cooling systems. The minerals and ions typically found in tap water can be corrosive to internal engine components and can cause a more rapid depletion of the anti-corrosion additives found in most antifreeze formulations

DM plants are based on Ion exchange technology and remove all the dissolved ions present in the raw water and the demineralised water produced is of high purity, with low electrical conductivity suitable for various lab applications. The two bed DM plants generally consist of two pressure vessels for accommodating cation and anion resins, nest of valves or multiport valve, piping, chemical tanks, testing kit and conductivity meter. The mixed bed DM plants consist of two types of resins, cation & anion in the same column. The resins are separated by water during regeneration and mixed with air for service cycle.

Drinking water plants are facilities where water is treated to make it portable. This process involves several phases such as catchment, mixing of coagulant & reactive substances, decanting & separation of sands, flocculation sedimentation, filtration, activated charcoal or chlorine. Drinking water plants are periodically clean the filters to remove particles that accumulate.

A dual filtration system consists of a coarse filter of felt on steel gauze followed by a fine ceramic filter with a pore diameter of 15 to 20 mm ensures that minimal fatigue debris reaches the contact area. The temperature of the oil leaving the test washer contact zone is measured by means of thermocouples situated in the oil throwout path. The oil condition-viscosity, acidity, moisture content, specific gravity, and particle content-is monitored regularly and maintained within strict limits.

The dual media filter usually consists of a fine bed of sand under a coarser bed of anthracite coal. The coarse coal removes most of the influent solids, while the fine sand performs a polishing function. At the end of the backwash, the fine sand settles to the bottom because it is denser than the coal, the filter is ready for normal operation.

Electrochemical Chlorination uses an electrolytic cell to produce chlorine gas from sodium chloride, thereby eliminating safety hazards associated with on-site storage of chlorine gas. Sodium chloride is added to the cyanide waste solution as the chlorine source. The waste is circulated through an electrolytic cell equipped with inert platinum anodes. It is an innovative method of cyanide destruction that reduces the safety risks associated with these chlorine sources. The electrodes generate powerful oxidizing agents and convert the cyanide to carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

Electrochlorination is used for water purification, chlorination of swimming pools, and disinfecting seawater used for cooling at power stations or on large ships. A small electric current applied through a ceramic electrode causes decomposition of water and the dissolved sodium chloride adjacent to the electrode to yield hypochlorous and/or hypochlorite ions. These ions have strong disinfecting capabilities. This process involves the electrolysis of sodium chloride to produce chlorine, hydrogen, hypochlorite, and NaOH.

An electrochlorinator is a device performing electrochlorination process. It produces chlorinated water from seawater or brine, using electricity. The chlorinated water is used as disinfectant cleaning agent in a heat exchanger. No other chemicals are required. When a low voltage DC current is applied to two graphite electrodes submerged in seawater, electrolysis occurs and sodium hypo chlorite (NaOCl) is generated instantaneously. This is classified as a non-hazardous chemical although still a very effective disinfectant. The only byproduct, hydrogen, is safely vented into the atmosphere.

Electrodeionization (EDI) is a separation process combining ion exchange and electro dialysis. This technology has been commercialized for removal of ionic species in high-purity water applications but has not been used in chemical processes because of unacceptable leakage rates and product loss. Also, these commercial EDI modules are not readily serviceable. EDI is an advanced technology for product purification and water recycling because it reduces or eliminates chemical usage and waste disposal and can greatly reduce energy consumption.

Electrolytic Organic Destruction (EOD) systems treat organic contaminants in waste or process water by oxidizing the organic compounds. EOD systems provide an alternative to ozone, biological, or chemical oxidants for industrial wastewater and process water treatment. EOD helps in converting the organic compounds into carbon dioxide or products that can be treated with biological methods.

Electrolytic organic destruction systems treat organic contaminants in waste or process water by oxidizing the organic compounds. Electrolytic organic destruction systems provide an alternative to ozone, biological, or chemical oxidants for industrial wastewater and process water treatment. Electrolytic organic destruction can convert many organic compounds into carbon dioxide or products that can be treated with biological methods. Electrolytic organic destruction can also reduce biological oxygen demand or chemical oxygen demand in treatment processes. It offers another tool to reduce volumes of expensive hazardous wastes. An EOD system is composed of an electrolyzer, tanks, pumps and control units. The EOD electrolyzer is an open tank containing 12, 24 or 48 - 0.4 m2 anode/cathode pairs arranged in a parallel electrical configuration. These electrochemical cells are designated ETC-12, ETC-24 and ETC-48. ETC stands for ELTECH Tank Cell. The system can be designed to run with current density of up to 2,000 amps /m2 and a flow rate of up to 300 g pm. The amount of current used is generally proportional to the amount of organic to be treated.
