Membrane autopsy is a technique, which is used to identify the cause of poor membrane performance. This requires a sacrificial membrane element to be removed from the plant for destructive analyses. Analytical techniques are used to determine the nature of membrane foulant present on the membrane surface. The membrane is cut open and representative samples taken for analysis. Detailed recording of the element structure and position of deposits is carried out to enable a complete report to be produced.

Microfiltration refers to filtration processes that use porous membranes to separate suspended particles with diameters between 0.1 and 10 micrometer. Thus, microfiltration membranes fall between ultrafiltration membranes and conventional filters. Microfiltration is a filtration process, which removes contaminants from a fluid or gas by passage through a micro porous membrane. A typical microfiltration membrane pore size range is 0.1 to 10 µm. Microfiltration is not fundamentally different from reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration or nanofiltration, except in terms of the size of the molecules it retains.

Micron filters are available in various types and capacities. Generally these are used after the above coarse filters so that the life is increased. These come in 50, 25, 10, 5, 1, 0.5, 0.2 and 0.1 micron rating. These are either absolute or nominal type. Nominal means 90 - 95 % particulate matter is trapped and absolute means 100 % particles are trapped. These come in various materials like PP, RBC, sintered, and SS. The weaving is also different like spun, wound, pleated, and grooved. These are widely used in pharmaceuticals, mineral water plants, pre-treatment to RO plants & point of use systems.
