Bearing Seals are axially loaded by a pressure pad and depending on the size of bearing. Bearing seals have two basic functions such as to keep contaminants out of the bearing and to keep the lubricant in the bearing. Bearing seals keep lubricant in the bearing and prevent dirt from entering the bearing. Bearing seals are made of felt material and used to keep lubricant around the bearing & keep dirt out.
Coatings of a soft bearing material allow the embedding of abrasive particles and permit deformation to accommodate some misalignment of the bearing surfaces. These surfaces require adequate lubrication and should be low in cost as they wear in preference to the mating surface. The role of coatings on bearing surfaces is to improve the rolling contact fatigue properties of 440C bearing steel. The life improvements were attributed to compressive residual stresses resulting from the coating process. Bearing surface coatings can run longer and cooler and superior for corrosion protection.
